同帕格尼同一天生日的陈美出生于新加坡，4岁移居伦敦。她5岁接触小提琴，其后她那非同寻常的音乐天赋迅速显现了出来。她在北京及伦敦皇家音乐学院进行了系统的学习，并在10岁时与伦敦爱乐合作完成了她的处女秀。
从10岁的至14岁，在众多强手之中，她在名家杰作的现场演奏及贝多芬、莫扎特、柴可夫斯基等人协奏曲的录音作品方面的非凡的出色表现，继续振憾着众多听众。特别是录音作品令她赢得了众多赞赏，《留声机》杂志这样评论她："毫无疑问地有非同一般的天赋……陈美显示出一种独特的风格，令人难忘的技巧和天生的演释能力……"这些作品现在被收入一个3张一套的CD合辑--陈美古典作品第1辑。这是她第一次出版她杰出的早期录音作品。
随着她的首张流行乐专辑在1995年推出，她创造出了一种全新的音乐风格，吸引了世界范围内数以百万计的观众的耳朵。最初这招致了顽固守旧的批评家的猛烈攻击，但得了世界范围内各类音乐爱好者的广泛欢迎。众多音乐家对此的赞赏与模仿蔚然成风。
